From Prompt Engineering to Prompt Craft

I’m delighted to present this pre-print version of From Prompt Engineering to Prompt Craft. This is a pictorial paper that I and Roger have put together reflecting on the development of Shadowplay as well as the related Cardshark project.

I hope the content is relatable and transferrable for other working with similar types of AI technology, and am excited to see whether that is the case (and conversely if it is not!)

A big theme in the paper is working on context-specific strategies to manage the (overwhelming) latent possibility space within today’s AI models.

You can access the paper via arXiv here: From Prompt Engineering to Prompt Craft.

The paper will be presented formally at the TEI 2025 conference early next year.

Alongside really relevant content, I’m proud of how we clearly articulated the story of how our design-led curiosity and exploration has led to insights that, while not proven or ‘scientific’, present practical and accessible intermediate knowledge (those two links take you to sections of the Permission to Muck About film that discuss those ideas).
