Half Way to the Future began as a celebration of the Mixed Reality Lab but accidentally turned into a full blown conference back in 2019. 2024 saw it’s second edition in Santa Cruz, California.
It’s a special kind of a event, deliberately a bit more adventurous than most ACM conferences and simultaneously with one foot in the past and one in the future. The format combines reflective pieces from luminaries, new work presented, and open panel sessions to discuss.
I was absolutely delighted to have a paper I wrote reflecting on the process of making Permission to Muck About be accepted into the conference proceedings, and to present it in one of these sessions that just happened to be a perfect fit - New ways of knowing.
The paper is designed to have a reciprocal relationship with the film, i.e., reading the paper, may shed some more light on the film, and the film may shed some more light on the paper. It’s open access, titled Permission to Muck About, Knowledge, and the Grammar of Intuition, and it’s available over here.
